What Is an Animal Health Certificate?

An Animal Health Certificate (AHC) is an official document issued by an authorised vet. It confirms that your pet meets the health requirements for travel or relocation. The certificate includes details about vaccinations, treatments, and the overall health status of the animal. Since Brexit, the AHC has replaced the EU Pet Passport for animals traveling between the UK and the EU.

The certificate is valid for 10 days from the date of issue for entry into the EU and for 4 months for onward travel within the EU. This means you need to plan your travel carefully and get the certificate close to your departure date.

What Animals Need an Animal Health Certificate?

The AHC applies to most pets and animals traveling between the UK and the EU, including:

  • Dogs

  • Cats

  • Ferrets

  • Certain types of livestock and horses (specific rules apply)

If you plan to travel with your pet or move animals for breeding, sale, or shows, you must have a valid certificate. That Patch and Purr Vets can advise you on whether your animal requires an AHC and help with the paperwork.
